Volunteer with Adults/Families

ESL for Parents

Dates:  September 19-December 7, 2011; January-June, 2012

Days: Mondays and/or Wednesdays 10am – 11:30am (Volunteer shift 9:45-11:45am)

Location: NewHolly Family Center Campus 7050-32nd Ave S, Seattle, WA 98118

Volunteers needed to assist volunteer lead teacher to provide one-on-one or small group support to participants who are working to develop and improve English reading, writing and conversation.  Participants are all actively parenting or grandparenting; Children’s activities are provided for pre-schoolers.  Students are at various levels; additional volunteer supports makes it possible to do smaller groups that are level-based. No ESL or instruction experience is necessary. Volunteers should be dependable and patient, be appreciative of and comfortable with diversity, have a sense of humor and be able to work as a team member.

 

NewHolly Family Center (NHFC) ESL Citizenship Class

Dates:  On-going with quarterly week-long breaks.

Days: Mondays and/or Wednesdays 10am – 12noon

Location: NewHolly Family Center Campus 7050-32nd Ave S, Seattle, WA 98118

Volunteers needed to assist volunteer lead teacher to provide one-on-one or small group support to adult participants who are preparing to take the US Citizenship exam.  Students are studying civics information, learning about US history, systems and customs, and improving skills in written and spoken English.  No Citizenship or instruction experience is necessary. Volunteers should be dependable and patient, be appreciative of and comfortable with diversity, have a sense of humor and be able to work as a team member.

 

Parent & Family Education Classes

Dates: TBD with volunteers -  Fall, Winter, Spring

Days: TBD  6-8 weeks series in evenings or on weekends.

Location:  NewHolly Family Center (7050 32nd Ave S, Seattle, WA 98118)

Location:  Rainier Beach Family Center 4730 – 32nd Ave S, Seattle, WA 98118 (located inside of Zion Preparatory Academy)

Volunteer Opportunities available for trained instructors for parent or youth segments. Volunteers also needed to support the program with food prep and serving, and/or child care/children’s activities.  We welcome instructors who know and support various curricula: Strengthening Families, SMEFC, STEP, Positive Discipline, etc.  Volunteers must be able to work as part of a team in a very diverse and dynamic environment.  If you can support any aspect of such a program, let’s talk!

 

Basic Sewing Class &/or Practice Time

Date:  Thursdays 10:30am – 12:30pm (6 weeks on, 1 week off)

Location:  NewHolly Family Center (7050 32nd Ave S, Seattle, WA 98118)

Instructors and assistants needed to instruct, assist and share your sewing skills with adults in the New Holly community.  Volunteer will teach basic sewing to a group of participants for whom English is their second or third language.  Most participants are just beginning to sew and are English Language Learners from East Africa and Southeast Asia.  Help students learn English language skills while they learn a “marketable” skill that they can use at home or on the job.  Volunteer benefits include entrance into the world of refugee and immigrants whose courage and perseverance are inspiring and whose stories tell of lives, lifestyles, “gifts” and challenges of another kind.  Two adult instructors needed to provide ongoing support.

 

Family Study Time

Dates:  September 27-December 15, 2011; January 10-June 14, 2012

Days:  Tuesdays and Thursdays - 6:00 – 7:30 (volunteer shift time 5:45-7:45pm)

Location: NewHolly Family Center (7050 32nd Ave S, Seattle, WA 98118)

Volunteers needed for homework help and reading support for elementary school students and/or their parents.  Volunteers may support participants in one or more ways: 1. Read with students one-on-one for 20-30 minutes each.  2. Provide one-on-one or small group homework support to children, adults or family groups including ELL (English Language Learner) participants. 3. Provide leadership for supplemental educational activities via games or computer research. The expected outcome is to help students jump a grade level in reading and learn to love reading.  Individuals work on things like GED preparation, preparation for US citizenship exam, and basic English language.  Some students may need help with homework or assistance with preparation for a test.
