Volunteer with Children & Youth

Youth Development Program for Excellence in Academics & Cultural Enrichment (PEACE)

Dates:  September 27-December 15, 2011; January 10-June 14, 2012

Days: Tuesday - Thursday, 3:30 – 5:00pm (volunteer shift time 3:00 – 5:00)

Location: NewHolly Teen Center (7054 32nd Ave S, Seattle, WA 98118)

PEACE is a program for after school homework assistance.  The majority of the participants are middle school youth that come to PEACE to complete homework assignments in math, reading, writing and science.  Volunteers are needed to assist youth with completing their assignments, as well as assisting staff with PEACE daily learning activities. 

 

Reading and Math Tutors

Date:  Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays (flexible) volunteer shift time 2:30 – 6:30pm.  Program time: 3:00 – 6:00pm. 

Location:  Rainier Beach Family Center 4730 – 32nd Ave S, Seattle, WA 98118 (located inside of Zion Preparatory Academy)

RBFC is in need of volunteer tutors to support elementary and middle school students.  Our focus will be on math and reading although other areas of expertise are appreciated.  Volunteers will prepare materials, develop curriculum (when applicable), provide one-on one learning support for children and parents, model good study habits and share

 

Family Study Time

Dates:  September 27-December 15, 2011; January 10-June 14, 2012

Days:  Tuesdays and Thursdays - 6:00 – 7:30 (volunteer shift time 5:45-7:45pm)

Location: NewHolly Family Center (7050 32nd Ave S, Seattle, WA 98118)

Volunteers needed for homework help and reading support for elementary school students and/or their parents.  Volunteers may support participants in one or more ways: 1. Read with students one-on-one for 20-30 minutes each.  2. Provide one-on-one or small group homework support to children, adults or family groups including ELL (English Language Learner) participants. 3. Provide leadership for supplemental educational activities via games or computer research. The expected outcome is to help students jump a grade level in reading and learn to love reading.  Individuals work on things like GED preparation, preparation for US citizenship exam, and basic English language.  Some students may need help with homework or assistance with preparation for a test. 

 

Child Development Assistant

Date:  Tuesdays 6:00pm – 8:00pm (volunteer shift time 5:30 – 8:30pm)

Location:  Rainier Beach Family Center 4730 – 32nd Ave S, Seattle, WA 98118 (located inside of Zion Preparatory Academy)

RBFC is in need of volunteers to support ongoing programs such as Teens As Parents and Fatherhood Connection.  Volunteers can expect to engage children ages birth to 4 years with activities that promote: learning through play; educational, social, and personal growth. Volunteers must work collaboratively with staff to maintain an orderly and safe environment conducive to growth and development.  Good verbal communication is required.  Volunteers will prepare materials, develop curriculum (when applicable), provide one-on-one learning support for children and parents, model good study habits and share techniques with parents and/or caregivers so that they are able to support their child’s learning outside of the center. Great for people who like to hold babies too! Minimum 3 month commitment.
